When Two Perfect Matches Fail: A Real Story of Psychological Screenings and Why Timing of Agency Fees Matters

When Hope Meets an Unexpected Roadblock

At Ivy Surrogacy, we’ve seen how the journey to parenthood can be full of highs and lows. Recently, we worked with an intended mother whose experience reminded us how unpredictable—and emotionally intense—surrogacy can be.

She found a surrogate she truly liked. The surrogate’s medical records passed the clinic’s review, and the next step was the psychological screening. We arranged it, the surrogate completed it, and the independent psychologist gave her a passing report.

But when we sent that report to the clinic, their in-house psychologist did not approve the surrogate—and there was no room for discussion or appeal. The intended mother was devastated. There was nothing we could do but move on to find another match.

Trying Again—with High Hopes

We soon presented another surrogate we believed was an excellent fit—someone we thought would pass with flying colors. The intended mother loved her.

This time, we decided to have the psychological screening done by a different independent psychologist. We knew the clinic’s in-house psychologist was very strict, so we hoped a different approach might make a difference.

Once again, the surrogate passed the independent screening. We sent the report to the clinic, feeling confident.

But to our surprise—and frustration—the in-house psychologist rejected her again.

When Discouragement Sets In

After two failed matches, both the intended mother and our team felt discouraged. To be honest, we weren’t sure we could find a surrogate who would meet this particular clinic’s in-house standards.

We gently suggested that she might want to search for a surrogate through other agencies as well, to increase her chances.

But her answer stopped us in our tracks. She told us that the more she saw situations like this, the less she wanted to work with other agencies—because almost all of them charge the agency fee upfront. If the surrogate didn’t pass the clinic’s requirements, she would be stuck with that agency, with no guarantee of when (or if) she’d be matched again.

Why Our Policy Made a Difference

At Ivy Surrogacy, we don’t charge the agency fee until your surrogate has passed both medical clearance and psychological screening. That means you never have to worry about being locked into a situation where your options are limited and your investment is at risk.

For this intended mother, that policy was the reason she could keep searching without fear of losing control over her journey.

Pushed Forward by Trust

We understood her completely. Even though we had moments where we felt like giving up, her trust in us reignited our determination.

That’s the reality of our work—sometimes, it’s the intended parents who push us forward. Their hope and faith remind us why we do what we do.

In the end, surrogacy is not just a process—it’s a shared journey, with all its challenges and triumphs. And at Ivy Surrogacy, we’re committed to walking it alongside you, every step of the way.
